Influence of salinity on the growth and heavy metal accumulation capacity of Spirodela polyrrhiza (Lemnaceae)

چکیده
Given that the characteristic of free floating plants to uptake metals can have a positive effect on the efficiency of the remediation process of a wetland, it is important to investigate the factors that may impact the process of uptake of metals by the plants. By conducting this present study over a short duration of time, the effects of salinity on the growth, the content of the photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, b, and carotenoid), and heavy metal uptake by Spirodela polyrrhiza were investigated. It was also observed that at a high level of salinity (100 and 200 mM NaCl) the relative growth rate (RGR) of the plant decreased. Especially, at a salinity level of 100 mM NaCl, the RGR values were noted to become negative. The content of photosynthetic pigment was negatively correlated with the salt level. Additionally, a high level of salinity was observed to cause a decrease in the accumulation of the metals cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) by S. polyrrhiza.

Interactions between Chromium and Plant Growth Regulators on the Growth of Spirodela polyrrhiza (L.) Schleiden
Chromium is one of the most toxic heavy metals which reduces the growth of plants at relatively low concentrations, whereas IAA, kinetin, GA3 and 24-epibrassinolide (24-epiBr) are well known plant growth regulators (PGRs) which enhance the growth of plants. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of binary combinations of Cr(VI) and PGRs on Spirodela polyrrhiza (L.) Schleiden, ...

Background: A pot experiment was conducted to determine the toxic effects of some heavy metals on the plant growth and seed yield of maize (Zea mays L.). Materials and Metheds: Heavy metals Mn, Pb, Cd, Cr and Co individually and in combinations were added as chloride salts in solutions to the pots before sowing. The test plants for were harvested after 80 days of germination and evaluated f...

The present investigation assessed the effects of a metalloid (arsenic) and two heavy metals (cadmium and mercury), on the growth and metal accumulation in two medicinal plant species, artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) and Savory (Satureja hortensis L.). The experiment was conducted hydroponically in spiked solution with different concentrations of arsenic (0, 20, 100, and 500 µM), cadmium (0, 10,...

A study to understand the biological effects of samples prepared with lead and the effects of lead were conducted on Lemna minor L. and Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleid. This study was intended to test the hypothesis that nutrient enrichment (P, NO(3) (-)-N and SO(4) (2-)) enhances the metal tolerance of floating macrophytes. The plants were exposed to Pb concentrations 0, 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 ...
